To Build Macro Units

A macro unit consists of one or more compatible units or other macro units. The Unit Assistant automatically converts a compatible unit into a macro unit if you add a macro unit or another compatible unit as a component. This conversion is indicated by a change in the unit's icon in the Component List.

Before you can build a new macro unit, it must exist as a compatible unit in the Units folder. For more information, see Creating New Units.

  1. In the Units view, select the unit that you want to build and then choose Unit Assistant from the Go menu to open the Unit Assistant.
  2. Or right-click the unit and select Unit Assistant from the shortcut menu.
  3. Or double-click the unit.
  4. With the Units Catalog displayed, click the catalog's Macros tab or Compatible Units tab or Private tab to display lists of available components.
  5. Select the component that you want to add to the unit and drag it from the catalog to the Component List.
  6. Or choose Copy from the Edit menu, select the name of the active unit in the Component List, and then choose Paste from the Edit menu.
  7. Or click the Copy button on the Standard toolbar, select the active unit, and click the Paste button.

Note: When dragging an item to the Component List, be sure to drop it on the name of the active unit and not another component in the list. The pointer symbol changes to a plus sign ( + ) when the drag-and-drop action is valid.

  8. To specify multiple instances of this component, double-click the "1" displayed in the Quantity column, type the desired value in the box, and then press the Tab key or click a different area of the Component List.
  9. To add additional components, repeat step 5. To add a material to the macro unit, click the Materials tab and repeat step 5.
